Appeals Process

Engaging in a Biblical Appeals Process

“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more” (Mt. 18:15–16).

1. The first step in resolving conflict between two parties is to take our concerns privately to the person in question, whether he or she is a peer or a leader. Our goal is to “win our brother,” not to win an argument. Skipping this first step usually leads to much unnecessary strife, division, and confusion

2. Next, if we are not received by the person involved, then we can engage in the appeals process that moves up the authority structure. For example, after an IHOPU student appeals directly to another student or a faculty member about whom they have a concern, if the situation is not resolved, they may then appeal to their friendship group leader; if the matter is still not resolved, they may appeal to the dean of students, and then, if necessary, to the Appeals Committee.

3. The Appeals Committee acts as the final internal step of our appeals process concerning conflict resolution between two parties.

Please email appeals@ihopkc.org if you feel unsafe or intimidated about approaching an individual with whom you have a grievance, and if you have any questions or comments about this process.

If a satisfactory resolution to a concern cannot be reached by our Appeals Committee, the committee is connected with two or three church networks throughout the city that may arbitrate in certain situations.
