Policies

Respecting Others

We want to create an atmosphere conducive to study.

  • Conversations must be quiet and limited to 30 seconds to respect those working around you.
  • Longer conversations must take place outside the library; for example, in the café area.
  • Singing, whistling, humming, etc., are not permissible.
  • Cell phones should be set to silent or vibrate, and calls may not be answered or made in the library.
  • Groups may not hold meetings in the library. Group studying is only possible if no discussion is involved.
  • Do not use more than one desk at a time (for you or for your belongings).
  • When you leave the library for more than 30 minutes, do not leave any belongings or resources at a desk. There is limited space and others may need to use the desk.
  • The library is not responsible for unattended belongings.
  • If you are not using a laptop, please avoid using the desks with Ethernet cords since laptop-users may need them.

Preserving Our Resources

Our goal is to preserve all resources so we can provide quality material and facilities for years to come. Anyone who damages any IHOPU library resource must either pay the library the retail value of the resource plus a $5.00 processing fee or give the library an approved copy of the resource as a replacement.

  • Food is not permitted in the library.
  • Drinks in the library must be in containers with a secure, screw lid.
  • When using a library resource outside of the library, do not place food or drinks on the cover or pages.
  • Do not mark your place in a book by setting an open book face-down, turning the corner of a page down, making a mark on the page, attaching a paper clip or post-it note, or inserting a writing utensil or other object. Doing these things puts pressure on the spine of a book and may damage the pages.
  • Do not use “clip” bookmarks.
  • Do not underline, highlight, or write in library resources.
  • Do not use a library book as a hard surface on which to write or draw. It could permanently damage the cover.

We also want to ensure a safe environment for all who enter the library.

  • No roughhousing permitted.
  • No sexual harassment tolerated (see policy).
  • You may not exit through the back emergency door.
