Behold the Lamb!

God created the human race to be His family—His beloved children and His Son’s eternal companion, the Bride of Christ. Then sin entered, separating the human race from God, but God had a plan. I imagine the Father saying, “We must pay for the guilt of the sin of the human race so that they can be with Me as originally intended.” Thus, according to the Father’s plan, the uncreated Son of God willingly wrapped Himself in the garments of humanity. He took a position, unique to the Godhead and unthinkable to the angels, becoming a man.

A person from the heavenly realm wrapped Himself in the garments of humanity, stepped out of the grandeur of eternity into time, and walked on the earth as a complete stranger to the human race. He was fully God and fully man—yet without sin.

This sinless Man Christ Jesus is the Lamb of God, who became the sacrifice for our sins. Sixteen centuries of animal sacrifices in the Old Testament had been a picture and symbol of salvation, “but this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God” (Heb. 10:11).

John the Baptist was the first preacher of the new covenant: “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn. 1:29). In John’s cry in the wilderness, I see him proclaiming, “The unthinkable is taking place; the Lamb is a person.” For generations a lamb had been slain by the Jews to atone for their sins. John’s hearers must have been stunned by the revelation that the sacrificial lamb was actually a symbol of this God-man, who had come from heaven.

The slain Lamb is God eternal in human form. In taking the sin of the world upon Himself, He made a way for fallen men and women to be with Him forever.
