His Faithfulness Fuels Our Hope

Some trust in lottery tickets and others in 401(k)s, and some even place their hopes in presidential candidates, but we can take a different approach.

Instead of looking to man-made approaches, the psalmist—who had a lot of experience with life’s troubles and the unexpected—points our gaze upward to the Everlasting God. He was settled on the truth of God’s nature. The One who was faithful in the past remains faithful now because He doesn’t change.

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” (Ps. 20:7)

This reminder comes after acknowledging that even though it is “a day of trouble,”  the Lord remains their source of help and strength; He is their defense. God can be trusted regardless of how things look. In fact, instead of what many would consider a “normal reaction” of worry or fear, the psalmist encourages practicing the opposite.

“We will rejoice in your salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.” (Ps. 20:5)

The psalmist looks to the Lord alone and confidently expects help from Him.

“Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand.” (Ps. 20:6)

As recent events have reinforced feelings of chaos and uncertainty, we can choose to refocus our attention and have peace as we remember the longstanding faithfulness of the One we look to and in whom we place our trust.

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe.” (Prov. 18:10)

The One who created the world is the One who directs your life. He is the One who delivered His children from bondage and never tires of gently reminding us to “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand (Isa. 41:10).”

And the One who has been victorious in every situation and challenge is the trustworthy One who calls you an overcomer through Christ Jesus. He loves you and is committed to seeing you succeed in this life and the next.
